Carmarthen awards evening

Awards pic Carmarthen 2005

L-R: Dr Quentin MacGarvie (Chair), Dr Matthew Griffiths (Director, Civic Trust for Wales), Margaret Evans (award recipient and executive committee member)

The society's Awards Evening took place recently before members and an invited audience, an annual event which publicly recognises the efforts made in Carmarthen to save the town's character by improving or creating buildings of merit.
Seven projects attracted awards and commendations ranging from shops to a dwelling house and former chapel, together with a local authority property. In most cases the owners and architects had employed local contractors to undertake the work.
The society's chair, Dr Quentin MacGarvie introduced and commented on the winning projects, and presented certificates to owners, architects and contractors.
The enormous effort made by the Carmarthenshire County Council conservation officers, John Llywelyn in particular, was acknowledged both by the society and by a number of award winners.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Dr Margaret Evans and Dr John Evans Award to Margaret Evans, a longstanding member of the society's executive committee for her outstanding contribution in recording and helping to conserve the history of the town. Of special note was her work on the photographic survey of the Carmarthen's historic ironwork.
