Tredegar Town Clock

 25 September 10-1 Back by popular demand - climb Tredegar Town Clock. Visitors can climb inside the clock tower and receive a ‘I climbed the town clock certificate’.
Built in 1858, the iron clock and tower is a symbolic reminder the town's existence and growth was due to the production of iron. The site chosen was then called Market Square, now 'The Circle', and the clock has become a landmark of which local residents are justly proud. The manager of the rapidly expanding Tredegar Ironworks in 1857 was Mr R. P. Davis who lived at Bedwellty House, and his wife took a keen interest in the affairs of the town. The idea of a Town Clock was originally hers and her husband promised a donation of £400 if she would undertake to raise money by some effort in the town. A committee was formed and preparations to hold a bazaar were made. Sadly, Mrs Davis died before this was held, but with the money raised, plus a further donation by Mr Davis, the target of £1,000 needed was reached.
James Watson was the engineer responsible for the overall design and supervised the erection of the main structure. It was cast in iron at the works of Charles Jordan, Iron Founder of Newport. The Tredegar Company loaned chains and derricks to lift the heavy structure and dozens of men were sent from the iron works to help with the tricky operation, which took sixteen weeks. Foundation works began in the autumn of 1858, but the tower and clock together were not completed until June the following year.
The clock tower is 72 feet high and the pillar is wholly composed of cast iron. The plinth is inscribed on its four aspects. One reads:
'Presented to the town of Tredegar from the proceeds of a bazaar promoted by the late Mrs R. P. Davis'.
Opposite is the name and description of the Iron Founder and his crest, while the other aspects have the Royal Arms of England and effigy of Wellington, England's Hero.
The clock was designed by Mr J. B. Joyce of Shropshire and the four translucent dials were originally illuminated by gas.
Over the years the Town Clock has been the meeting place for the town's celebrations, some of the most joyous and colourful being those held at the end of the second World War. The end of the black-out was a signal to illuminate the tower with hundreds of lamps. The Welsh flag flew from its apex and singing and dancing continued for many days and nights.
In its long history, the clock has kept time with remarkable accuracy and can be said to be a fine example of iron casting and a monument to the industry of the town and its people. In 1992 the Town Council completed a phased programme of conservation of the Town Clock which includes: stainless steel tie rods for stability, interior galvanised steel platforms with connecting ladders, innovations to and a complete overhaul of the clock mechanism by the original clockmakers, the replacement of the cupola roof louvres and clock face decorative grilles and, finally its repainting.
In 1996, Tredegar Town Council undertook a further programme of conservation which included the replacement of seriously corroded bolts and plates. Corrosion of a circular plate at the top of the clock tower necessitated its replacement and the complete removal of the clock chamber. It was removed by crane on 21st March 1996 and shipped to Derbyshire where it underwent anti-corrosive treatment, replacement and repainting; at the same time J. B. Joyce, the original clockmakers, overhauled the mechanism. The clock chamber was returned on 1st May 1996 and after reassembly J. B. Joyce reglazed and regilded the clock's dial frames. Repainting in the now distinct gold and claret completed the refurbishment and to celebrate its completion a balloon release took place on 14th September and the Town Clock was opened to general public for the first time. This event coincided with European Heritage Days and is repeated annually attracting many interested adults and children who wish to climb the inside of the Clock tower.
DIS Access is restricted to those physically able to negotiate the steep metal ladders. Anyone not able to climb the ladders may be able to view inside the clock from the outside platform. The town council reserve the right to refuse access to anyone who they feel is not fit for entry. LOC Take the A4048 off the A465 Heads of the Valleys road. 17 September 10 am Following in the footsteps of the Chartist, this 5 hour walk on the hillsides above the village of Trefil also takes in Bryn Oer Tramroad, Dukes table and Garn Fawr, one of the largest burial cairns in Wales. Meet at Tafarn ty Uchaf (Top House), Trefil at 10.00 am. Wear suitable clothing and a packed lunch. Llwynywermod, near the village of Myddfai (near Llandovery), was bought by the DucHy of Cornwall in November 2006. The cottage was renovated using the expertise of skilled Welsh craftspeople. Materials were sourced from within Wales wherever possible. Some of the stone and Welsh slate used in the renovation were recovered from the site. Of vernacular design, the cottage was built using local materials and traditional building methods to help keep it cool in summer and warm in winter. Cob walls and natural sheep’s wool insulation help retain heat while still letting the building breathe.

26 Sep, 2, 3 and 4 Tours of Court Farm organised by the Friends of Cwrt Farm — the largest medieval manor house surviving in Carmarthenshire, an historical and cultural landmark that deserves restoration. Dating back to the fourteenthe century (or perhaps earlier), this is the oldest domestic building in the area. It was once the centre of a large estate. With wooded hills at its back, it looks out onto marshland and sea. 17th-century additions included a kitchen, a new roof and windows, and fine panelling. Later in the century, a northern service wing was added. In the 19th century the property was sub-divided to accommodate tenant farmers. The "barn" is a curious structure. It has corbelling and battlements, and its entry seems too small for use as a barn or gatehouse. It may have been part of a larger structure. The building is a rare and important survivor, both locally and in the context of Carmarthenshire. Website LOC Take A484 to Pembrey. Opposite the church, turn up Heol y Mynydd. The walk focuses on Denbigh in the first half of the 17th century, the battle of Denbigh Green and the siege of Denbigh Castle. The route takes in the town centre and principal civil war sites utilising public roads, public footpaths across fields and some steep climbs near the castle. Meet at Denbigh Library.

Denbigh Heritage Festival Market
Denbigh Business Group is hosting a Heritage Festival Market in the Market Hall and Crown Square from 9am until 4pm on Saturday 11 September. There will be live music and entertainment, a hog roast, mead, Bara Brith and homemade breads made to traditional recipes along with a wide variety of stalls. The whole town will become involved with local pubs serving real ales, cafés will serve traditional food and many retail outlets and eateries will dress in period costume. There will be an old style fair with stocks, skittles and apple bobbing. A competition – ‘Denbigh’s Open Doors’ will be held where you can go in search of the doors in the photographs and find out what is behind them.

Newport Castle stands on the banks of the River Usk, where it was built in the early 14th century to guard the settlement and control the river crossing.
Much of the surviving stone structure dates from around 1405 when the castle was extended and strengthened following the sacking of the area by Owain Glyndwr. It's three tall towers to dominate the Usk. Newport Castle had an active life of about 200 years and only during very little of this time was it actually occupied by its lord. For a brief time at the beginning of the 16th century, Jasper Tudor, Henry VIII’s uncle, lived here. The castle is not normally open to the public. LOC Located close to Newport city centre, adjacent to Town Bridge. It is located between the River Usk and Old College Green roundabout. DIS Steps and and uneven levels make the site unsuitable for those with limited mobility.

St Mary’s Churchyard/Trevor Mausoleum
11 Sep, 2-4 This event is the official launch of the Sacred Space interpretation panels and leaflets which highlight significant features of historical and wildlife interest in twelve church yards in rural Wrexham. The launch event includes a rare opening of the Trevor Mauseoleum within the churchyard. This is a grade II listed building, erected in 1904 for Mary, daughter of the second Lord Trevor, who had died, aged 5. Inside the mausoleum is a beautiful life-size angel, tenderly carrying the child. LOC LL14 5HA. Park in main car park, off Colliery Road.
