Llandeilo society establishes itself

llandeilo_view (Llandeilo CS)

A civic society has been re-established in Llandeilo with a new name and an expanded area of activity.

To celebrate, Professor Malcolm Parry, formerly head of the Welsh School of Architecture, gave a public lecture at a reception in November 2004.

The new group is already very active. It has met with the county council’s Estates Department to discuss new uses for the historic Provisions Market – a building that, as demonstrated by its use as a festival and arts venue, still holds a central place in the life of the town.

The society has been involved in discussions on the future of the Public Hall and Literary Institute. It is also represented on the town council’s Heritage Group which is developing a heritage strategy for Llandeilo following an audit by Cambria Archaeology.

In a different vein, the Trust organised a meeting with interested parties to discuss the future of Llandeilo’s railway station, on the Central Wales line.

It was generally recognised that there was a need to improve the general appearance of the station as a gateway to the town.

A local architect who is vice-chair of the society’s executive has produced computer-enhanced photographs. These show the effect that the introduction of appropriate railings and planting boxes would have on a visitor’s first impressions of the town. Further changes could include refacing stone walls, providing a platform roof and cladding blockwork.
