Overcoming the barriers

Call for nominations:
Local Design Awards
Cadw Access Awards

Washington Cinema, Penarth - from the 2004 awardsThe Trust is calling for entries for the 2006 Local Design Awards and for the innovative Access Awards sponsored by Cadw, the historic monuments division of the Welsh Assembly Government.

Civic Societies are invited to nominate recently completed projects for the 2005-6 round of Local Design Awards. In parallel they are invited to nominate projects which have achieved successful and possibly innovative solutions to accessibility in historic buildings for the new Cadw Access Awards. They are encouraged to work with local access groups and local authority access officers (who may also enter projects independently) in generating nominations for the latter. A project may be entered for either or both awards. This scheme builds on the 2003-4 pilot (pdf brochure, 314kb) which successfully engaged civic societies in the celebration of good local design – design which responds to local context in a way that sets a standard to be emulated in the community.

Criteria: Local Design Awards
The criteria for the Design Awards match those set in 2004:

  • The awards celebrate good local design evaluated by local people.
  • Most types and scales of project can be nominated; entries can include new buildings as well as projects that respect the character of older properties.
  • A conservation scheme might involve major alterations or careful renovation of detail.
  • Projects should respond to local context and character and may display innovative or contemporary design solutions.
  • Projects should respond to user needs and where relevant contribute to a sustainable, enjoyable, safe and secure environment.
  • Projects should have been completed since September 2000.

Societies may consider entering projects that have achieved recognition through their own award schemes. Nominations will be reviewed and awards decided by a panel drawn from the Trust board, including members elected by civic societies. All schemes that in the opinion of the panel successfully respond to the criteria will receive awards.

Criteria: Cadw Access Awards
This scheme is sponsored by Cadw, the Welsh Assembly Government’s historic environment division. Nominations may be made by civic societies or other relevant organisations including local access groups. Projects should successfully address the problem of providing access for disabled people to historic buildings, which the scheme defines as being listed or in a conservation area. We can place societies interested in making nominations in touch with local access groups and local authority advisory staff, and vice versa. Nominations will be assessed by a panel including a representative of Disability Wales and Cadw’s access specialist. Successful schemes will reflect the principles in Overcoming the Barriers, Cadw’s guidance on access. Copies are available from Cadw by post or on Cadw’s website: http://www.cadw.wales.gov.uk/default.asp?id=127&navId=15&parentId=15. The Access Awards will be provided by Cadw.
